Bald-face hornets can typically be found in aerial nests around the exterior of a property, although they have been known to build nests within bushes. Their nests are grayish, round structures that are made up of several layers. These hornets can grow up to ¾ of an inch long, and are notable for their black and white coloring. Depending on the size of the nest, a colony may have more than 400 worker hornets at a time, in addition to a queen. Although the hornets will die off at the end of the season, the queen will live on to begin repopulating.
These hornets can be very aggressive, and should not be approached if you spot any in or around your property without taking the proper precautions. This is especially true if you encounter a hornet near its nest.
